What’s an International Project?
One of EWB-SDSU’s main focuses is to work on international development projects. Each project is planned and developed to meet the specific needs of the partner community. Like other chapters, our chapter follows EWB-USA’s set of guidelines in all aspects of these projects.
The international project team for EWB is mainly focused on engineering projects outside of the country. We are responsible for maintaining communications with the community we have based our project in, our REIC (Responsible Engineer in Charge), contractors and others who facilitate the progress of the project. Our ICP (International Community Program) projects can vary in scope and are always targeted at creating sustainable solutions to day to day operations.

The Uganda Project
We are remotely working on an international development project that will benefit the community of Mbaala in Uganda. This village of 1,500 people depends on water from various water sources which are untreated, unreliable, and not easily accessible. We are collaborating with EWB-USA and the Mbaalan villagers in creating a closer water supply to the village with a manual or solar panel powered hand pump. The current water source in Mbaala is a spring shared with animals and wildlife and the children sent out to retrieve water trek half hour round trip through a sugarcane plantation - where they are susceptible to rape, diseases, snake bites, among others. This new water source will provide the Mbaalan villagers with a constant supply of clean and accessible water.
We are currently determining tasks and objectives for the first assessment trip. If you would like more information, please contact our international project leads, Mar Balvaneda and Savian Jimenez, at [email protected].
If you would like to instead (or additionally) support this project monetarily, please donate at gofund.me/6486ee00.

Uganda Project: Updates and Progress (2023-present)
As of Fall 2023, the Uganda Project, is undergoing the hydrogeological survey phase with the company Aquatech Enterprises. Next, the main focus will be on drilling and then afterwards the design of the new water supply source and the determination of its closer location to the village.
PAST PROJECTS
The Nicaragua Project
We are unfortunately no longer working on the Nicaragua development project due to COVID-19. Please read below on what we would have loved to continue, if there are any questions regarding this project, please contact the EWB Presidents. Thank You.
Nicaragua Project, an international development project that would have benefit the communities of Agua Fria, El Delirio, and La Canada in Nicaragua. These communities all use a spring as their only water source that is unreliable and not easily accessible. We planned on implementing a solar powered pump distribution system to pump water up from the spring to the top of the hill and a gravity fed distribution system to transport the water to two communal taps in the communities. The system would have provided these communities with accessible and portable water.
We were in the second assessment phase of our project. Our first assessment trip took place in July of 2016. During the first trip we focused on building relationships in the community, meeting their leaders, and assessing the feasibility of the project. Following a successful first trip, we planned our second assessment trip which would have focused on collecting technical data moving our design forward.
