Sustainable Technology Links

The following links were gathered and placed on this page as an aim to spread the word on various types of appropriate and sustainable technologies. The information on these pages help EWB and other non profit organizations in their endeavours to improve the quality of life in developing communities.

1) Sustainable Village in Boulder, CO. The database lists more than 10,000 appropriate technology products in a catalog that can be downloaded on line. This is an invaluable reference tool for all renewable energy, sustainable development and micro-enterprise projects worldwide. Check the Carebridge web site for additional information about the performance of various technologies in the developing world.

2) Village Earth has an appropriate technology library. It contains the complete text and images from over 1,050 of the best books on all areas of village-level and do-it-yourself technologies...over 150,000 pages! In use in over 130 countries by Peace Corps Volunteers, development and relief organizations, engineers, and missionaries, the Appropriate Technology library is the most comprehensive, compact, and cost effective information resource in the world!

3) The Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) in the provides a wealth of information and references and technical briefs in appropriate and sustainable technologies for the developing world.

4) ABS Alaska Inc has large database of information on alternative energy technologies. Find out what you need for solar, wind, micro-hydro or backup power systems. Check the ABS Energy Information Library for more technical information about each system.

5) The Sustainable Building Electronic Directory links to hundreds of free sustainable building articles on the Internet.

6) Lifewater International provides a comprehensive list of US AID Technical Notes covering all aspects of rural areas water and sanitation.

7) GAPMINDER is a non-profit venture for development and provision of free software that visualize human development.

8) The 226 issues of Sustainable Practices from the Environmental Protection Agency (2000-2005) are available on line.

9) Our People, Our Resources: "Supporting Rural Communities in Participatory Action Research on Population Dynamics and the local Environment" is a new handbook published in 2004 by the IUCN Social Policy Program . This "must read" document illustrates concepts, methods and tools for primary environmental care, and an approach that seeks to empower communities to meet basic needs while protecting the environment. Emphasis is placed on a community led process of participatory action research in which local knowledge and skills and fully utilized. The main purpose is to promote the effective, integrsated management of environment and population dynamics for the benefit of local people in rural communities. This handbook contains a lot of useful case studies.

10) The Colorado Alliance of Sustainable Business Associations (CASBA) supports the promotion of sustainable and socially responsible business practices in Colorado.

11) Sandec is the Department of Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).
