EWB-SDSU through EWB-USA provides a wealth of resources and opportunities for students and faculty looking for project ideas for Senior Design (capstone) classes, Engineering Project classes, and Independent Studies. Our projects often require the development of appropriate and sustainable technologies and the design of systems and solutions that could be implemented in small, developing communities worldwide.
Selecting an EWB project for research, independent study, or Senior Design class often exposes students to a wide range of real-life engineering situations from concept to implementation. Such exposure matches well with the recommendations for general engineering education suggested in the ASCE Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century and by ABET (criteria 3 and 4).

Current Project: Clean Water for Tejeras, Honduras

Status: Implementation planned for January 2013
Country: Honduras, Central America
Region/state: Olanchito, Yoro
Location in Country: 120 KM South of La Ceiba, Atlantida
Community: Tejeras

Description: The driving vision of the Engineers Without Borders - San Diego State University Chapter over the past year has been a water quality project in the community of Tejeras, Honduras. The water source is polluted and is making the inhabitants sick with gastrointestinal problems and skin irritations. EWB has partnered with the non-profit organization AJAASSPIB, an association of representatives from the various communities within the south sector of the national park Pico Bonito developed to protect and make decisions about their water and resources. The goal of the project is to work with the community to implement a clean water solution that the community can self-sustain. We traveled on our first site assessment trip in January 2011 and did water testing, mapping, health surveys and developed community relations.  On our second trip in January 2012, we finished our assessments and are now creating design plans for an improved water system. For more information, check out our Tejeras Project page.

Senior Design
EWB-SDSU works closely with senior design professors and students to give the students the tools necessary to develop a real, implementable solutions to real world problems. EWB-SDSU's Tejeras Project was chosen as the senior design project for Fall 2010. A group of students comprised of civil, environmental, and construction engineering majors designed potential solutions to the potable water problem. These included water distribution pipeline repair and design, water storage repair and design, rainwater catchment design, water quality testing and disinfection, ground water pumping design, and surface water dam design. Check out the team's final report on YouTube.

Past Projects

  • Colonia De San Bernardo Project
  • Esperanza International Project
  • San Jose de la Zorra / Necua Project

Research Projects

Students can review the Research Topics provided by EWB-USA and choose one to work on for the school year. Students can also develop their own research ideas. EWB-SDSU will provide support where appropriate and asks for the students to submit a report at the end of the semester to document their progress and to share the research with other EWB chapters and EWB-USA.

Past Research Projects:
  • Small-Scale Anaerobic Digestion for Developing Communities (Mechanical Senior Design Team 2010-2011)
  • Rice Drying Mechanism
  • Heat Powered LED Lighting Device

Independent Studies

Many EWB projects can serve as semester-long independent studies or engineering technical electives. This must be approved by the school and student adviser. Contact the president for more details, president.ewbsdsu@gmail.com.
